April 22, 2009 - a message from AAHomecare

AAHomecare Rehab Council Seeks Distinct Medicare Benefit for Complex Rehab
With its recently-formed task force, AAHomecare’s Rehab and Assistive Technology Council (RATC) is moving forward on creating a distinct benefit within Medicare Part B for complex rehab, similar to that for orthotics and prosthetics, and is working closely with the National Coalition of Assistive and Rehab Technology (NCART). RATC will also work with the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association as well as patient advocacy groups to build consensus around this plan.

On the regulatory front, the RATC is finalizing a letter to all DME Medicare Administrative Contractor medical directors regarding clarification from CMS on recent policy, released earlier this year, on Medicare coverage for repair, labor, billing and payment of beneficiary-owned medical equipment. The policy assigns varying units of service (1 unit of service equals 15 minutes) for a type of equipment, such as a power or manual wheelchair, and the part being repaired or replaced, such as drive wheel motors and joysticks.  In addition, Council members continue to actively engage the Association’s champions on Capitol Hill to support AAHomecare’s stance on eliminating competitive bidding; preserving the first-month purchase option and restoring the 9.5 % payment cut for the reimbursement of the complex rehab product and service category

March 11, 2009 - GAMES / GRTC must begin to gather cases for possible next steps in the battle for appropriate funding and patient access to care!

  • Open ALL codes approved by Medicare or ALL codes associated with Complex Rehab (Providers - please clarify request)
  • Conduct quarterly meetings in an effort to solicit provider input and enhance provider communication
